Chilean Honeycrisp exports to the U.S. are expected to set a volume record this season, according to a news release from Elgin, Minn.-based Wescott Agri Products, parent company of Honeybear Marketing.
Wescott and Honeybear have exclusive rights to market Chilean Honeycrisps, first marketed by the company in 2011. Spring and summer demand has been growing “phenomenally,” said Don Roper, Honeybear’s vice president of marketing, in the release.
“By growing Honeycrisp in both North and South America, we are able to provide a year-round fresh crop supply assurance program for our retail partners and their customers,” Roper said in the release.
In 2011, Wescott inked a deal with Santiago-based grower-shipper Frusan to market Chilean Honeycrisps in the U.S.
Wescott plans to introduce other new apple varieties in the next several years.
“We take a lot of pride in the efforts we make to identify and develop new varieties for our retail partners and their consumers,” Fred Wescott, the company’s president, said in the release. “By focusing our energies on developing varieties with great flavor and a rich eating experience, we are able to bring excitement and growth to the apple category.”
