Chiquita Brands International has awarded a $20,000 grant to fund more than 1,000 textbooks for students in rural Guatemala.

The grant went to Cincinnati-based nonprofit Cooperative for Education in support of its Guatemala Textbook Program, according to a news release.

The organization, which also has offices in Guatemala City, conducts service trips to the Central American nation each February and August for Cincinnati residents and others to meet the youths it benefits.

“Chiquita is proud to support the Cooperative for Education and their efforts to elevate the quality of education in Guatemala,” Manuel Rodriguez, Chiquita’s chief corporate responsibility officer and senior vice president for government and international affairs, said in the release.

Founded in 1996, the cooperative has provided textbooks, computers, and scholarships to more than 100,000 children in Guatemala, and trained more than 400 rural teachers there. More information is available at the cooperative's website.

Under its collective bargaining agreement with Guatemalan trade unions, Chiquita also provides school uniforms and supplies for 1,850 children of employees, plus 55 scholarships annually.
