20+ years Produce Truck Broker
SC  |  November, 20, 2013 at 10:01 AM

Growing up in a trucking family, and having been apart of some of the best known trucking companies and brokerages in the produce industry, I say kudos to Mr. VanDerveer. This is what our industry has become. Instead of hiring seasoned produce transportation professionals to lead Choptank's new refrigerated LTL division, they hire someone with 19 years in the Boating industry to lead them in this new venture. Nothing against Mr. VanDerveer, he's simplying filling a need in his life and their organization. I believe this story says more about Choptank and how they present themselves in the produce world. 5 pallets of Lettuce from Yuma to New York isn't the same as shipping a Chris Craft from Florida to Newport, RI. These type decisions have led to the demise of a once Prestigious field of work. Today's new hire brokers do not know how to set freight rates, nor do they understand the ins and outs of the produce industry. They could not tell you what nights Hunt's Point is open, but they can tell how how many miles it is to your next drop, because they are not brokers, but rather dispatchers.
