The Department of Labor has added 30 days to the comment period on its proposal to revise regulations addressing child labor in agricultural and non-agricultural settings under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
The comment deadline is now Dec.1.
The proposed rule by the Wage and Hour Division would change existing child labor regulations and introduce enforcement policies regarding civil penalties for child labor violations.
The proposed rule can be viewed at http://www.regulations.gov and searched by regulation identification number 1235-AA06.
More than 1,000 comments were received regarding the proposal through Nov. 1. Agriculture interests opposing the regulation have called it duplicative and unnecessary, fearing it would undermine the traditional extended family farm by limiting the ability of grandchildren, nieces and nephews to learn the business.
The Department of Labor said the information about the federal labor laws enforced by the Wage and Hour Division is available in English and Spanish by calling 866-487-9243 or by visiting the department's website at http://www.dol.gov/whd/.
