IRWINDALE, Calif. — Rep. Judy Chu, D-Calif., paid a visit to the Ready Pac Foods Inc. plant to see firsthand how the company makes single-serve salads for school children.

Tom BurfieldSantiago Pacheco, director of Irwindale, operations for Ready Pac Foods Inc., Irwindale, Calif., tells U.S. Rep. Judy Chu about the manufacturing process for the school lunch salads. The March 23 visit was sparked by a meeting that Mike Celani, Ready Pac senior vice president of sales and marketing, had with the 32nd District congresswoman this past fall as part of the United Fresh Produce Association’s Washington Public Policy Conference in Washington, D.C.

“We indicated we would love to have her come by and visit us when she’s back to California,” Celani said, “and she was gracious enough to do that,

Ready Pac is one of the largest employers in Chu’s district.

Children’s nutrition is a prime concern of the congresswoman, who introduced a bill that would maintain adequate federal funding for school lunch programs in 2010.

Her district includes about 108,000 students.
