Mastronardi Produce Ltd./Sunset Produce came close to sweeping the tomato category of an annual Ontario hothouse contest.

The Kingsville, Ontario, company won five of eight tomato awards, part of the annual Hottest Tomato, Perfect Pepper, and Coolest Cucumber Event in Leamington, Ontario.

Mastronardi won the best overall tomato competition, for the fourth straight year. It also won the people’s choice, best bite size, best cluster, and best cocktail tomato awards.

Last year, the company won six of eight tomato awards. This year, it also won three awards for its peppers, including the people’s choice award. It’s the competition’s fifth year.

Fisherville Greenhouses, Fisherville, Ontario, won for best beefsteak tomato. Mucci International Marketing Inc., Kingsville, Ontario, won the best roma tomato.

Pure Hot House Foods Inc., based in Leamington, won the best overall pepper for the second straight year, along with the best sweet specialty pepper. While Mastronardi won the best red bell pepper, Pure Hot House won for best green and orange bell peppers. Howard Huy Farms Ltd., also based in Leamington, won for best yellow bell pepper.

Erie James Ltd., Leamington, won three of four cucumber awards, including best overall cucumber, and best English seedless and mini seedless cucumbers. Clifford Produce Sales Ltd., Ruthven, Ontario, won the people’s choice cucumber award.
