(UPDATED COVERAGE, March 20) Food safety specialist and manufacturer Birko Corp. has installed equipment at sliced apple processor Crunch Pak facilities designed to ensure pathogens don’t enter the plants.
Crunch Pak facilities in Cashmere, Wash., and Dauberville, Pa., have the Birko entryway foamers that sanitize footwear and forklift tires when entering/leaving the plants. A New Jersey site will be implemented later, said Ozgur Koc, the apple shipper’s director of research, food safety and quality assurance.
Henderson, Colo.-based Birko has also provided chemistry products to Crunch Pak that include:
- Algae Guard Quat Blocks, used in refrigeration units to prevent biofilm growth;
- Sterilex drain cleaners used in listeria prevention; and
- Sterilex cleaners to remove biofilm from processing equipment.
Crunch Pak’s nighttime sanitation program uses Birko’s cleaning products.
“Listeria prevention is a very high priority for us,” Koc said. “The use of entryway foamers and boot scrubbers helps prevent the entry of potentially harmful bacteria into our processing and packaging areas.”
Birko representatives conduct classes on chemical use and safety for Crunch Pak’s sanitation staff members, Koc said. A microbiologist will visit the facilities semiannually to review food safety processes.
