Crunch Pak FlavorzCourtesy Crunch PakCrunch Pak has started nationwide retail shipments of Flavorz — sliced apples with the flavors of other fruits — in Disney-themed packaging.

Flavorz comes in three varieties: peach mango with Disney characters Phineas and Ferb; grape with Mickey Mouse and friends; and strawberry vanilla cream with Disney Princess characters.

Cashmere, Wash.-based Crunch Pak introduced the product to the trade at United Fresh 2012 in May. The fall rollout targets back-to-school shoppers. Suggested retail price for a clamshell of five 2-ounce packages is $3.99 to $4.29, according to a news release.

The flavors are natural with no added sugars, Tony Freytag, senior vice president of sales and marketing, told The Packer in April. Flavors are applied after slicing; they’re aromatic but do not change fruit appearance or texture.

To preview contents, Crunch Pak is developing rub-and-smell stickers for clamshell exteriors.

Focus group testing with children ages 3 to 7 helped narrow down the flavors, and more flavors could be offered. Peach mango, for example, was developed for children, but Crunch Pak hopes to reach adults who would use it in salads.

The flavoring process is proprietary and designed in-house for Crunch Pak equipment. Flavorz is unrelated to the company’s 2010 acquisition of Stemilt Growers’ sliced apple business, according to Freytag.

Stemilt’s AppleSweets line included berry, caramel and apple pie flavors, which were discontinued.

Flavorz was developed in tandem with Disney Consumer Products and meets Disney nutritional guidelines, according to Crunch Pak.
