BALTIMORE — Fresh produce has gone freeze-dried, and children are eating it up.
Crunchies Food Co., Westlake Village, Calif., hopes to solidify its place in the fresh produce department with the late October introduction of single-serve Munch Paks to the marketplace. The company offered a sneak peak of the new product Sept. 22-24 at the Natural Products Expo East/All Things Organic show.
“They’re freeze-dried without heat, so they maintain about 90% of the nutrients,” said Jessi Brennan, event/advertising marketing coordinator of the company, which has enjoyed 31% growth year-to-year since its inception about five years ago.
The company’s formula is simple: offer fresh fruit that has been freeze-dried in packs. There are no other ingredients, so they’re kosher-certified with no preservatives and are fat-free, said James Lacey, president and chief executive officer.
Crunchies snacks have a shelf life of at least a year and the new packs — one-third ounce each — are strawberries, cinnamon-apple, mango, mixed fruit, pear and pineapple.
