Danny’s Melon Shed, a Cordele, Ga., watermelon packinghouse, gained high marks in food safety.

On June 28, the watermelon packinghouse adjacent to the Cordele Farmers Market received word it achieved a 100% score on its first Global Food Safety Initiative with Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Point audit that was conducted on May 1, according to a news release.

“We worked extremely hard to get our facility in compliance with the Global Food Safety Initiative standards and incorporated Good Manufacturing Practices,” Danny Wilcher, president, said in the release.

Danny’s worked with ABL Farms Inc., in Longwood, Fla., which is connected to watermelon repacker Southern Melon Distributors Inc., Forest Park, Ga., on the certification, according to the release.

ABL and Southern Melon Distributors provide a food safety mentorship program that certifies each growing and packing operations it owns or does business with throughout the U.S., Elizabeth Bateman, ABL’s director of food safety, said in the release.
