Dole Fresh Fruit honored Ventura County, California veterans – among them Pearl Harbor survivors – at a Memorial Day event in Simi Valley.

Westlake Village, Calif.-based Dole was a part sponsor of the May 28 Salute to Arms luncheon at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, according to a news release. More than 1,000 attended.

Pearl Harbor survivors Nelson Holman and Ford Rice were honored, as was Army Staff Sgt. Andrew Britton-Mihalo of Simi Valley, recently killed in action in Afghanistan.

“It is a tremendous honor for Dole to participate in (an) event that recognizes the accomplishment and sacrifices made by the members of the armed forces in our community,” Dole Fresh Fruit vice president of marketing David Bright said in the release.

The memorial luncheon had a Hawaiian luau theme with food donated by Ventura County restaurants. Among other things, Dole provided bananas, pineapples and pineapple juice, plus strawberries, broccoli, cauliflower and celery.
