DoleDole Food Co. Inc. is a co-sponsor of a three-day celebration in honor of the banana split.

The Great American Banana Split Celebration will be Aug. 23-25 in Latrobe, Pa., which is recognized as the dessert’s birthplace, according to a news release from the City of Latrobe.

Dole and Latrobe’s Saint Vincent College are co-sponsoring the event, which features three days of tastings, run/walks, parties and dances commemorating Pennsylvania’s designation of Latrobe as the official banana split birthplace.

The celebration culminates Aug. 25 with the world’s largest banana split bar.

Dole will supply thousands of bananas for the event.

According to local history, in 1904, David Strickler of Tassel Pharmacy in Latrobe created the first banana splits for students at Saint Vincent College.

LATROBE, PA, NEEDS JOBS, NOT BANANAS. The small rust-belt town, defunct steel mill town of 8,200 people has 15-30% of the population receiving some sort of government assistance (depending on the source). At least 33% of the town is elderly and living on SSA, where the average benefit is $1,200 (Christian Science Monitor), and the median income of the town's households is $10,000 less than the rest of Westmoreland County (Latrobe funded study). 85% of Latrobe residents are either using food banks, or barely getting by. And the town wants to honor the making of an ice cream treat? Perhaps the town should deal with the heroin trade first, illustrated in the following link produced by "The Tribune Review" newspaper; its three toxic sites second, (Center for Disease Control, Atlanta, GA) and its dire economy? Here's a map showing the drug deaths in Latrobe, exceeding last year's numbers already by 40%. --
