Courtesy Dole Fresh VegetablesDole Fresh Vegetables expects nationwide distribution of its Salad Companions, launched in June, by October.

Each Salad Companions product includes a mix of toppings — such as dried cranberries, apple chips or roasted nuts — with a dressing. Consumers toss it with greens, head lettuces or salad blends.

Suggested retail price is $3.79. It’s available in refrigerated dressing sections or alongside Dole’s salad kits and blends. More combinations are expected soon, according to a news release.

Available this fall are:

  • Apple Walnut Harvest with apple chips, dried cranberries, walnuts, aged white cheddar cheese and apple cider dijon vinaigrette dressing;
  • Pesto Asiago with pine nuts, sun-dried tomato croutons, shredded asiago and mozzarella cheeses and Caesar dressing;
  • Pecan Honey Dijon with dried cranberries, roasted pecans, cornbread croutons, aged white cheddar and honey dijon dressing; and
  • Signature Caesar with parmesan, romano, asiago and mozzarella cheeses, toasted garlic croutons and Caesar dressing.

Pairing suggestions for blends and leafy greens are included.

Dole plans to offer on-pack coupons; web, social media and shopper marketing programs; and Salad Circle content.

Salad Companions aims to make it easy for consumers to try new recipes with paired ingredients but without a full bottle of dressing, Elsa Pong, director of marketing, new products and innovation at Monterey, Calif.-based Dole Fresh Vegetables, said in the release.

The company also launched organic versions of four conventional salad blends into national distribution. They’re packed in clamshells with resealable lids that retail for $3.99.

They are:

  • Organic Arugula Blend (5 ounces);
  • Organic 50/50 Blend, with baby spinach and a spring mix blend of baby lettuces, baby greens and endive (5, 10 and 16 ounces);
  • Organic Baby Spinach Blend (5, 10 and 16 ounces); and
  • Organic Spring Mix Blend with baby lettuces, baby greens, endive and radicchio (5, 10 and 16 ounces).

Dole showed its organic salads in April at the Fresh Produce & Floral Council’s Northern California Expo.

“We launched an initial line of organic salad blends last year consistent with the gradual mainstreaming of organic and to satisfy industry demand for a separate, Dole-branded organic line,” CarrieAnn Arias, director of marketing, said in the release.
