Dole kicked off its summer banana promotion with a Peel the Love food truck tour in Seattle — one of eight cities selected for their above-average per-capita consumption of the fruit.

Dole Packaged Foods and Blue Diamond Almond Breeze are co-sponsors of the nationwide tour by the pink and turquoise truck through Sept. 2.

Stops on the tour:

  • Seattle, May 25 to June 2
  • Sacramento, June 6-10
  • Los Angeles, June 13-24
  • Phoenix, June 27 to July 6
  • Houston, July 11-20
  • Des Moines, Iowa, July 25 to Aug. 4
  • Baltimore and Washington D.C., Aug. 8-18
  • New York City, Aug. 21 to Sept. 2

The truck will visit supermarkets and other venues, including public events, to offer banana recipe tasting; recipe cards; and free product samples, according to a news release. Walk-up visitors can sample Blue Diamond’s almond milk, Dole fruit bowls and Dole Squish’ems. Other giveaways include banana-themed coloring books; T-shirts; hats; coupons; and brochures.

In some cities, nutrition experts with the tour are planning rallies, games and contests at nonprofits.

Oversized video screens on the truck will run videos showing how bananas get from the field to the store.

Dole and Blue Diamond are using the tour to tout nutritional benefits and convenience. New recipes available for sampling will include banana pineapple coconut smoothies; Thai noodle salad with banana peanut dressing; banana pudding pops; banana s’mores; and grilled bananas and chocolate monkeys.

“After months of planning, we’re excited to finally be hitting the road to take our message that bananas and nutrition can be fun to cities from coast to coast,” Bil Goldfield, communications manager of Dole Fresh Fruit, said in the release.

The tour is part of a yearlong Peel the Love initiative by Dole.

Information is available online at a Dole website and related Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The tour is expected to cover 4,800 miles.
