Domex Superfresh GrowersDomex Superfresh Growers and other producers expect ample volumes for the Pacific Northwest summer cherry crop.

Harvests in the region are due to start in early June, with promotable volume by the end of that month and plenty of fruit forecast for the Fourth of July holiday.

The cherry crop there has the potential to exceed 20 million boxes. Last year’s rain-hampered crop yielded just 14.3 million.

“Once the cherries get close to harvest we will begin to concern ourselves with protecting them from rain and the damage it can cause to ripe cherries,” cherry grower Jerry Mertz told Domex Superfresh Growers chief horticulturalist Dave Gleason during a video interview in Selah, Wash.

“With a mild winter, a very nice spring so far and a nice even bloom on the trees, the bees have been able to work well,” Mertz said.

“The expectation is that we will have a very nice cherry crop.”
