Dole Fruit Bowls, Captain Planet Foundation and Tops Friendly Markets are hosting the Learning Garden Grant contest for local elementary schools in Upstate New York, Northern Pennsylvania and Western Vermont.

The contest offers elementary schools the chance to win a Learning Garden installation for their school. The garden will provide a hands-on learning experience that supports understanding of natural systems, food origins, and healthy eating, said a news release.

The two winning schools will receive five raised beds planted on school property, a fully-equipped mobile cooking cart, and lesson supply kits that will facilitate learning in the garden. Lesson plans will be provided to teachers who will have the opportunity to attend a one-day professional development workshop, hosted by Captain Planet Foundation.

The contest will be open on CaptainPlanetFoundation.org from March 24, 2014 to May 3, 2014.

The winning schools will be announced in June and will be honored with an end-of-year celebration, hosted by Tops Friendly Markets.

“Captain Planet Foundation is dedicated to nurturing the next generation of environmental stewards, and ensuring they are armed with an understanding of the natural world in which they live,” said Leesa Carter, executive director of Captain Planet Foundation.
