The Envy, a variety owned by New Zealand-based Enza and marketed in North America by Vancouver, British Columbia-based The Oppenheimer Group, won the contest at an event staged by the Junior League of Bakersfield, Calif., according to an Oppy news release.

The event, held Feb. 20, featured Arleana Waller, author of “369 Things a Woman Must Enjoy Before She Dies.” The event’s menu featured appetizers including Jazz apple Asian slaw, Envy apple chicken roulade lollipops and apple drinks.

Four Bakersfield community leaders participated in the taste test, which considered the Envy and other premier apple varieties. In addition to the contest, the event included a roundtable discussion on apples featuring Waller and representatives from Oppy and other companies.

Shipments of Washington-grown Envys will wind up soon, but New Zealand Envys should be available in North America by June.
