FDAThe Food and Drug Administration is scheduling a series of meetings on proposed produce food safety rules, and the United Fresh Produce Association is sponsoring similar meetings in advance of each FDA event.

The first FDA meeting is set for Feb. 28-March 1 in Washington, D.C., starting at 8:30 a.m. each day in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Jefferson Auditorium at 14th Street and Independence Avenue.

United Fresh is planning a meeting for Feb. 27. United Fresh vice president of communications Ray Gilmer said a location and specific information on enrolling will be available the week of Feb. 4.

The FDA’s first session ends at 5 p.m., the second at noon. The two-day meeting is the first of three planned; the rest are yet to be scheduled. Gilmer said those meetings will be preceeded by United Fresh events as well.

Online registration for the FDA meeting is available or contact Courtney Treece at 704-258-4983 or ctreece@planningprofessionals.com. Advance registration closes Feb. 20, according to a news release.

The FDA meeting will discuss proposed rules and standards for growing, harvesting, packing, and holding produce; good manufacturing practice, hazard analysis and preventive controls. The produce safety and preventive control rules are the first of several proposals to establish the framework for the Food Safety Modernization Act.

Public comments will be heard at the meeting, in which the FDA will also respond to questions about the rulemaking process. Feb. 8 is the deadline to comment during the meeting.

The deadline for public comment on the process is May 16. Online comments are available for the produce safety rules and the preventive controls.
