Food facilities that are required to register with the Food and Drug Administration must renew their registration this year.

According to the FDA, the renewal period starts Oct. 1 and ends Dec. 31, according to a news release.

Earlier this year, the FDA reported U.S. food facility registrations total 81,575, while foreign registrations total 115,753. Total food facility registrations in February were 197,328, according to the FDA.

Of that total, nearly 74,000 were packers or repackers of FDA covered commodities, including fresh produce. Manufacturers or processors accounted for about 98,000 registrations, according to the FDA.

The FDA has published documents on food facility registration on its website, and has published frequently asked questions about the process online.
