Cristian Allendes Marin has been elected president of Chile’s National Federation of Fruit Producers, also known as Fedefruta.

Allendes, a grower southwest of Santiago, has a 2-year term as Fedefruta president, from 2012-14, according to Fedefruta.

He replaces Antonio Walker, who served from 2010-12,

According to Fedefruta, 2011-12 exports from Chile to all destinations through the first week of May showed a decline of 3% compared with a year ago. The decline has mainly been influenced by drops in export shipments of apples (-24%), kiwi (-10%) and nectarines (-9%) Table grapes were down 4%.

Water shortages limited fruit size and development in some regions, Allendes said in the release. In his term as president, he said he will work to boost water availability for agriculture, strengthen partnerships among producers, increase international promotion of Chilean fruit and seek to connect more Chilean workers with fruit producers, according to the release.

Manuel Alcaino, president of the export information service Decofrut S.A., Santiago, said Allendes is a very large grower who is a partner in Gesex, one of the top 20 export companies in Chile.

“(Allendes) is certainly a very dynamic person with a deep and clear view and knowledge of the industry and its challenges,” Alcaino said in an e-mail.
