Michelle ObamaFirst lady Michelle Obama will add star power to the release of the final rule for updated school nutrition standards.

The first lady will join Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack Jan. 25 at an Alexandria, Va., elementary school to speak about the USDA’s updated nutrition standards, according to the agency’s Office of Communications.

The agency called the updated nutrition standards an important accomplishment of the Healthy, Hunger Free Kids Act that become law last year and the first major change in nutrition standards in more than 15 years.

“The new standards make the same kinds of changes that many parents are already encouraging at home, including ensuring kids are offered fruits and vegetables every day of the week, substantially increasing offerings of whole grain-rich foods, offering only fat-free or low-fat milk varieties and making sure kids are getting proper portion sizes,” according to the USDA.

Obama and Vilsack will visit the Parklawn Elementary School in Alexandria, Va. to have lunch with kids, with television food personality Rachael Ray on hand to serve food from an improved menu.

What will Obama and his wife do when they find out it is not school lunches that are adding to the obesity problems our youngsters experiencing? It is not the cafeteria food or milk, but sedentary lifestyles they are leading today is the real problem. Also, granted we didn’t have the fast food outlets today as we did back in the 60s that is part of the problem as well. Agreed we want school lunches to be tasty, affordable and nutritious. But can you achieve all three goals at the same time? After all, you get what you pay for.
