FirstFruits Marketing, Yakima, Wash., created its Take a Bite Out of Hunger program to help feed the hungry and bring attention to food insecurity in the U.S.

Sweetbay Supermarkets, Sobeys, United Supermarkets, Grocery Outlet, Dave’s Marketplace, H-E-B and JH Harveys joined together to donate 250,000 pounds of apples to local food banks, according to a news release.

The companies want to help provide healthy options for needy families since 94% of food-insecure homes cannot afford to eat balanced meals, the release said.

“For the second year our retail partners joined us in supporting a cause that is critical to our mission of helping the underserved,” Andy Tudor, marketing manager at FirstFruits Marketing said in the release. “We love providing fresh apples to the food banks because fresh and healthy produce is often missing from their pantries.”
