FirstFruits Marketing gave away more than 6,000 Opal apples in New York City Dec. 2.

The event was held in honor of Giving Tuesday, celebrated by many worldwide as a day of giving back, and to bring attention to the Opal Youth Make a Difference Initiative, according to a news release from Yakima, Wash.-based FirstFruits.

Opal brand ambassadors handed out more than 5,000 Opals in midtown Manhattan, and an additional 1,000 were donated to Sienna House, a family shelter in the Bronx.

“After Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday is a great counterpoint to focus on others,” Keith Mathews, FirstFruits’ chief executive officer, said in the release. “Giving is a core value of Opal, so this event was a great way to give to others and also introduce them to this sweet, crispy apple variety and its purpose.”

The Opal Youth Make a Difference Initiative donated $75,000 in grants last season to youth-based initiatives in which youths have leadership roles and that address food security and politics, nutrition, agriculture or education.
