FLORIDA — Shipments (124-159-233, red-flesh seeded 16-29-53, red-flesh seedless 51-130-180) — Movement expected to increase as more growers start the season in central Florida. Harvesting slowed. Trading very active. Prices generally unchanged. 24-inch bins per-pound red-flesh seeded-type 35s 24-25 cents; red-flesh seedless-type 45 count 29-30 cents, 60 count 29-30 cents. Quality generally good.

IMPERIAL AND COACHELLA VALLEYS, CALIF., AND CENTRAL AND WESTERN ARIZONA — Shipments (AZ seedless 0-23-16, CA 0-26-78, seedless 0-24-73, seeded 0-2-5) — Movement from western Arizona, Imperial and Coachella valleys expected to increase seasonally. Trading fairly active at slightly lower prices. Prices slightly lower. Red-flesh seedless-type per pound 24-inch bins approximately 35 and 45 counts mostly 22 cents. Organic red-flesh seedless 24-inch bins per pound approximately 35 and 45 counts 35 cents; miniature carton 6s and 8s $20.50. Quality generally good. Florida commissioner enters state ag hall of fame

Former Florida agriculture commissioner Charles Bronson is among the latest group of inductees into the Sunshine State’s hall of fame.

Charles BronsonBronson The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and Florida Agricultural Hall of Fame Foundation picked Bronson, agriculture commissioner from 2001-11, as a 2012 Hall of Fame inductee.

A Kissimmee, Fla., native, Bronson headed the Southern Association of State Departments of Agriculture and was a member of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Fruit and Vegetable Industry Advisory Committee.

A former state senator, he is also credited with creating the state’s Fresh from Florida produce retail marketing program, which is in its 14th season.

Daniel BottsBotts Bronson was also noted for negotiating the state’s settlement with BP (British Petroleum) in the 2010 Deepwater Horizon Gulf oil spill and started the Farm To Fuel alternative energy program.

Another nominee is Daniel Botts, the director of the Maitland-based Florida Fruit & Vegetable Association’s environmental and pest management division.

Botts is being recognized as a leader and a advocate for Florida growers in pesticide policy. His work helped ensure continued availability of key crop protectants including methyl bromide, according to a news release.
