A higher valencia forecast has boosted the estimated size of Florida’s 2011-12 orange crop.

The Sunshine State is expected to produce about 72 million boxes of valencias this season, up from the May forecast of 71 million boxes, according to the Citrus June Forecast from the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.

The boost in valencia production pushes the overall forecast for Florida orange volumes to 146.2 million boxes.

California is second with 58 million boxes expected, unchanged from the May estimate. Texas is forecast to produce 1.4 million boxes.
