Del Monte Fresh Produce NA Inc. is expanding into Canada by constructing its first fresh-cut processing plant.

Del MonteThe Coral Gables, Fla.-based Del Monte plans to open a processing plant in Oshawa, Ontario, sometime during the fourth quarter of 2013.

Amanda Press, a Del Monte spokeswoman, wouldn’t elaborate further on the precise date of the plant’s opening, but said more details will be released closer to the official opening.

The 108,000-square-foot plant is set to accommodate 16 trucks simultaneously and also serve as a forward distribution center for fresh produce.

The new operation will serve customers in Ontario and Quebec and should allow Del Monte to service most of its customers in those provinces, Press said.

“Canada is an important market for Del Monte Fresh Produce and the Canadian retailers and consumers have come to recognize the … Del Monte brand,” Press said. “We believe that the new facility in Oshawa will allow us to better serve our customers and introduce new premium quality Del Monte fresh cut products to Canadian consumers.”
