Fresh-cut produce is among hundreds of products added to a recall by Garden-Fresh Foods Inc. because of possible listeria monocytogenes contamination.
The fresh-cut vegetables are listed in the eighth recall notice issued by the Milwaukee-based company since Aug. 30; the previous seven concerned meat products and deli salads.
The list of fresh-cut produce in the Nov. 7 recall expansion includes more than 60 different products, ranging from chopped onions and potatoes to carrot and celery sticks.
Fresh-cut salad kits are also included in the recall. A partial list of Garden-Fresh Foods’ recalled products is available on the FDA’s website at http://tinyurl.com/Garden-Fresh.
No illnesses have been reported, according to the Food and Drug Administration and the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
All of the products came from the sole Garden-Fresh Foods production facility, which closed pending the completion of investigations by state and federal authorities, said the company’s attorney Nicholas DiUlio. He said the company will not re-open the facility until receiving an all clear message from authorities.
“We are taking the opportunity to work with the state of Wisconsin and other regulatory agencies to eradicate the source of these issues. We are reviewing all aspects of our operation,” owners Tom and Vicki Hughes said in a statement issued by DiUlio.
The couple founded Garden-Fresh Foods in 1978. They have more than 100 employees at their 170,000-square-foot facility, which provides products to grocery chains, restaurants, health care facilities, and institutions throughout the country, according to the company website.
Additional products under recall are listed in previous FDA notices, which can be accessed from the Nov. 7 recall notice. The earlier recalls are dated Sept. 21, Oct. 29 and Nov. 4.
More recalled products are posted on the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service website in a series of three recall notices from Sept. 25, Oct. 17 and Oct. 25. Those products include chicken and ham, as well as some fresh produce ingredients.
