PEAR BUREAU: Pear Bureau Northwest, Milwaukie, Ore., is planning a retail display contest beginning in February, said Bob Catinella, Sudbury, Mass.-based regional marketing director. The contest will have 39 winners in three categories: one to five registers, six to nine registers and 10 or more, Catinella said.
First place winners in each category will receive $1,000, second place winners $750 and third place $500, he said. Ten receiving honorable mention in each category will win $150 each.
Catinella said the contest is geared so smaller stores have a chance to compete. Displays will be judged on appearance, creativity and their educational impact. The contest is planned to run through March.
CENTRAL AMERICAN PRODUCE INC.: Hard squash grown in Guatemala is the focus for Pompano Beach, Fla.-based Central American Produce this season, says Shannon Barthel, marketing director. Central American Produce’s growers there are at a high altitude with a dry climate, which produces squash with deep color and rich flavor, she says.

KERRY’S KITCHEN GARDENS: Apoka, Fla.-based Kerry’s Kitchen Gardens is offering year-round greenhouse-grown fresh herbs and microgreens packaged for retail and foodservice, says president and chief executive officer Kerry Herndon, displaying microthyme. The company’s new growing and packing facility is undergoing final certification and is scheduled to be ready to ship product throughout the Eastern U.S. starting in January, he says.
