Following the May 20 tornado that hit the Oklahoma City suburb, Dunn went to vendors at the Chicago International Produce Market asking for donations for the storm victims. Every vendor agreed to help, said Tracy Rubin of the JCutler Media Group in Los Angeles.

Dunn also secured the services of truck driver Joe Denny who donated his time to drive a semi with a 52-foot refrigerated trailer to the storm-ravaged community. Denny and Dunn headed out of the Windy City May 23 with the load of donated fruits and vegetables.

As an employee of The FruitGuys, Dunn is familiar with providing assistance to those in need. Founded in San Francisco in 1998, The FruitGuys are considered pioneers in the fruit-at-work movement, Rubin said.

While the company started out delivering fresh produce to offices in San Francisco, it has grown to have distribution hubs across the country. Each hub works with local growers to provide next-day delivery to businesses, homes and schools.

The FruitGuys also makes weekly donations to food pantries and this year founded a non-profit entity — The FruitGuys Community Fund — that supports small independent growers and sustainable agriculture.
