Gilroy Garlic Festival gives $350,000 to nonprofits

Gilroy Garlic FestivalThe Gilroy Garlic Festival has distributed $350,000 to 167 nonprofits from proceeds at its annual event.

The 35th annual festival was July 26-28 in Gilroy, Calif. This year’s awards to nonprofit organizations brought total giving to $10,366,251 since 1979, festival association president Dennis Harrigan said in a news release.

The festival relies on 4,000 volunteers.

The five largest beneficiaries this year are:

  • South Valley Community Church Youth Group, $17,020;
  • Gilroy High School and Christopher High School Alliance Choir, $13,748;
  • Live Oak Emerald Regime, $11,787;
  • South Valley Young Life, $11,743; and
  • Gilroy Police Explorers Post 818, $10,520.

A list of recipients will be posted online.

The festival also provided $267,000 for improvements to event venue Christmas Hill Park; $7,000 for college scholarships to schools participating in the Garlic Bowl; and $2,000 toward renovation of the City of Gilroy downtown mural.

The 2014 festival is July 25-27.
