The Vidalia Onion Festival Committee selected Melissa Harris as the winner of the design contest for the Golden Onion trophy.

Her design features a plate, fork and knife balancing a large Vidalia onion.

The trophy goes to the winner of the Golden Onion professional cooking competition, the kick-off of the Vidalia Onion Festival April 22.

Twelve Georgia chefs will have one hour to prepare and present recipes that feature Vidalia onions.

Sonny Dixon, host on Savannah, Ga., television station WTOC’s new programs, is the event's emcee.

Judges are:

Holly Chute, executive chef at the Georgia Governor’s Mansion;

Hector Santiago, who owns three restaurants in Atlanta;

Brian Whitcomb, southeastern division district chef for Eurest, under the Compass Group Americas;

Bob Stafford, director of the Vidalia Onion Business Council; and

Hope Philbrick, an Atlanta freelance writer who helped create the Golden Onion competition.
