Greenhouse-grown butter lettuce has joined the list of fresh produce items available under the Green Giant Fresh label.

Salinas, Calif.-based Growers Express produces the hydroponic butter lettuce. Its attached roots lengthen shelf life in comparison to other fully harvested lettuces, according to a news release.

Each lettuce head is packaged in a clamshell with the Green Giant Fresh label and Box Tops for Education logo. Box Tops for Education coupons can be clipped to earn money for local schools, an effort that’s raised more than $558 million since 1996.

The clamshell includes a quick response code that links to recipes, preparation and handling tips.

“On the heels of over 25 other product launches this year, we are very excited to expand our greenhouse line with Green Giant Fresh butter lettuce,” Jamie Strachan, chief executive officer of Growers Express, said in the release.

In 2012, Green Giant Fresh began offering greenhouse grown tomatoes in partnership with Windset Farms.
