Greenhouse grower converts carbon dioxide

Canadian greenhouse grower SunSelect Produce is using a technology that turns carbon dioxide into fertilizer for its sweet bell pepper plants.

Dubbed GC6 Green Carbon Capture, it’s a creation of Aldergrove, British Columbia-based ProSelect Gas Treating Inc., an affiliated company.

SunSelect’s bell peppers are marketed by Vancouver-based The Oppenheimer Group. Oppenheimer is touting the peppers and the sustainability initiative through social media and point-of-sale materials that direct consumers to SunSelect’s revised website.

In the system, a boiler uses wood waste to heat a 40-acre greenhouse. The remaining flue gas is cooled, stripped of carbon dioxide using a water-based organic solvent and stored in a buffer tank.

“Carbon-free excess vapor is harmlessly emitted into the atmosphere,” Victor Krahn, director and co-founder of ProSelect, said in a news release. “The resulting pure carbon dioxide-laden solvent i s boiled off to release food-grade CO2 gas at the demand of the greenhouse, cooled and administered directly to the plants in a seamless, computer-controlled and monitored process.”

The traditional approach by greenhouses has been to use liquid carbon dioxide and natural gas to deliver enriched carbon dioxide for plant nourishment. The new system pursues renewable energy.

“(It) can serve as a powerful point of differentiation for SunSelect,” Aaron Quon, Oppenheimer’s greenhouse category director, said in the release. “Now, conscientious retailers are starting to understand the benefits of a truly sustainable system.”

Great technology and I just wonder if you can give me a feedback of the following: 1- Time frame using this technology. 2- Savings, ROI and the expected time in years to recover the initial investments. 3- Experiences with the production before and after. 4- Are you planning to sale this type of project?
