Organics Unlimited, San Diego, Calif., has hired Alberto Ramirez Rivera as general manager of production of the banana farms at Rancho El Tesoro, Colima, Mexico. Ramirez is one of 44 students who completed university studies through the company’s GROW (Giving Resources and Opportunities to Workers) program.
Rivera will be responsible for the quality of the fruit, from planting through harvesting, including the application of organic fertilizers, protection from pests and quality control at harvest.
In 2005, Organics Unlimited started GROW to help grower commuities, and the program has provided more than $750,000 to cover issues in Mexico and Ecuador like elementary to university level education, safe drinking water, early childhood education and vision and dental clinics.
Funding is through a surcharge on the sale of the bananas.
