The Hacienda Special Reserve Heirloom tomatoes debuted at the Fresh Summit 2013 in New Orleans to rave reviews, said Sabrina Pokomandy, marketing manager for JemD Farms. She said the tomatoes are being marketed as vintage vegetables.

“They are reminiscent of a case of fine wine and a true gastronomic delight for tomato aficionados and chefs,” Pokomandy said.

Packed in display ready boxes that resemble a wooden wine box, complete with shaved aspen wood packing material, the Hacienda Special Reserve Heirloom collection includes six varieties: brandy yellow, cherokee green, cherokee purple, green zebra, aurea and big tiger.

Each variety has a unique flavor and when displayed or cooked together the tomatoes can create eye-catching dishes that chefs and at-home cooks can use to enhance holiday meals.

Also new from JemD is a value-added pack for the company’s 7-ounce overwrap tray of mini cucumbers. The packs include a flavor packet from Tajin, a Mexico-based producer of seasonings and sauces. The flavor packets are designed to be sprinkled on the mini cucumbers.

In addition to tomatoes and cucumbers, JemD also grows bell peppers and eggplants at its greenhouses in Canada and Mexico. A new greenhouse complex is under construction in Virginia, with the first harvest expected in late 2014.
