The Feeding America Backpack program now includes Wonderful Halos mandarins.

Actress Jennie Garth and actor Mario Lopez kicked off the campaign on Feb. 5 at the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. Garth, Lopez and other volunteers packed Halos and other food for students in the Los Angeles and Compton Unified School Districts, according to a news release from Paramount Citrus, which markets the fruit. The program is part of a larger effort to provide 1.3 million meals to people in need, according to a news release.

The Feeding America BackPack Program supplies children with healthy food for the weekend, according to the release. Bags of food are assembled at more than 150 food banks and distributed to nearly 230,000 children every year, according to the release.

“Food banks around the country are constantly in need of healthy fresh fruit,” Leah Ray, vice president of corporate partnerships, Feeding America, said in the release.

“Feeding America is the perfect partner for us, as they are an incredible ally for combatting hunger and getting fresh fruit to those most in need,” Marc Seguin, vice president of global marketing for Wonderful Halos, said in the release.

Cheryl Burke from “Dancing with the Stars,” celebrity fitness instructor Tracy Anderson, television personality Kristin Cavallari and actor Austin Basis have designed backpacks for Feeding America. The sale of the backpacks will be used to raise additional funds for the program, according to the release.
