Ham Farms employees soaked in ice bucket challengeBuckets of ice water drenched a company official and other employees of Ham Farms & Produce Co., who took the ALS ice bucket challenge.

On Aug. 26, six office and administration employees, including Stacy Ham-Lane, the Snow Hill, N.C.-based grower-shipper’s vice president, and Sydnee Sliker, sales representative, climbed 300 feet to the top of a company silo to get water poured on them.

John Hance, accountant, started the chain of bucket dumping on top of one of the silos at a sweet potato storage area and dehydration plant scheduled to open in September.

In a video of the event, the participants discuss who nominated them and then nominated others as they poured water over themselves.

They challenged others to get involved in the cause that raises money and generates awareness for ALS which is often referred to as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.

“This whole ice bucket challenge has really taken the nation by storm and helped create a lot of awareness of the disease,” said William Kornegay, sales manager. “We thought it would be a fun way to individually help encourage others in the industry and community to get involved and create more overall awareness.”

Ham grows 13,000 acres of sweet potatoes in North Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
