The Delta, British Columbia-based company has donated $30,000 and is raising another $30,000 for the project, which was conceived by president and chief executive officer Casey Houweling, according to a news release.
Holland-based Kubo Sustainable Greenhouse Projects is donating the structure, which is scheduled to be shipped to the Tactic region of Guatemala this month.
Houweling got the idea for the greenhouse following a trip to Tactic in 2012.
“What really struck me was the malnutrition,” Houweling said in the release. “A large part of the population eats only beans, rice and corn tortillas. Fruits and vegetables are rarely eaten.”
Tactic has a great climate for growing produce, Houweling said, but frequent heavy rains wash away seeds.
Seedlings will grow in the new greenhouse until they are strong enough to be transplanted to fields, Houweling said.
