A Canadian greenhouse vegetable veteran has joined Houweling’s Tomatoes.

Carol Glancy is the new Canadian sales manager for Delta, British Columbia-based Houweling’s, according to a company news release.

Glancy’s 17 years in the Canadian greenhouse industry include stints at Sun Rich Fresh Foods and Origin Organic Farms.

The hiring of Glancy coincides with Houweling’s decision to grow winter tomatoes in Delta. Earlier this year, the company pulled five acres of summer tomatoes early, renovated part of its greenhouse and installed grow lights for its winter crop.

The decision was driven by increasing demand for locally grown produce, Casey Houweling, the company’s president, said in the release.

“The demand for locally grown vegetables has exploded,” Houweling said. “Shoppers often rank it ahead of imported organic as a purchase factor, but in the winter months, BC retailers haven’t had a local source to meet this need.”

Based on positive response to Houweling’s first winter tomato crop, the company could expand acreage next season, David Bell, chief marketing officer, said in the release.

In addition, stickers advertising “BC Grown” will appear on all Houweling products grown in British Columbia.
