UPDATED:Iowa, Nebraska link parasite outbreaks to packaged salads

Patricia Quinlisk, Iowa’s head epidemiologist and medical director of the state’s health department, said the Iowa Department of Investigations and Appeals is working to traceback individual ingredients in prepackaged salad mix, which she said has already been traced to one distributor.

“We are very confident that it’s still not in the supply chain,” Quinlisk said, “because the illness onset dates are all back at in June and very early July.”

Both Iowa and Nebraska officials said the salad mix contained iceberg and romaine lettuce, carrots and red cabbage.

Quinlisk said that Iowa’s daily count of patients continues to increase, though, because people who are have been sick for some time are just now being tested and diagnosed. Similar scenarios are playing out in the other 14 state with confirmed cases.

“The symptoms can hang on for a long time, months sometimes,” Quinlisk said.

The Food and Drug Administration has been working with state officials and the CDC since the rare parasite infections started being reported to the CDC June 28.

Iowa officials asked the federal agencies to take over the investigation in mid-July, but CDC and FDA officials said their agencies would not take the lead at least until a possible source was identified.

In an update July 30, the FDA reported what Iowa officials have found related to the salad mix, but did not indicate that the federal government would step in to take over the investigation. FDA did report it has dedicated seven people at its headquarters to investigate the outbreak.

“FDA is following the strongest leads provided by the states and has prioritized the ingredients of the salad mix identified by Iowa for the traceback investigation, but is following other leads as well,” according to FDA’s July 30 update.

The CDC reported July 31 that 378 confirmed cases of cyclospora parasite infection have been reported from 16 health departments: Iowa, Nebraska, Texas, Wisconsin, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, New York City and Ohio.

CDC and state officials have said that the cyclospora parasite, which is a one-celled microscopic animal, is extremely rare in the U.S. It is endemic in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, and U.S. cases are generally linked to international travel, according to the federal agencies.

The FDA has consistently reported that the outbreaks are possibly linked to an undetermined food source. The CDC and state health agencies have reported that previous U.S. cyclospora outbreaks were linked to imported produce, such as a 1996 outbreak linked to fresh raspberries from Guatemala.

Great info....but one critical piece is missing for complete public awareness and to allow consumers to take proactive health protection measures: WHO IS THE PRODUCER OF SAID PREPACKAGED SALADS??????

Bob, I understand your frustration, but none of the government entities involved in the investigation are releasing specific information on the producer, brand, restaurants or retailers that may be involved -- emphasis on "may" because no solid evidence is available yet. This is the usual course of action during outbreak investigations. As soon as additional details are available, we will report them. Also, please note that the agencies are all encouraging people to continue to eat fresh produce, including packaged salads, because the suspect products would have been consumed in mid- to late June and would be well past their shelf life at this point.

Coral, this specific lot of packaged salads is no longer on shelves, BUT the company responsible for this is surely still processing/packaging/distributing new lots of this product using the exact same methods that resulted in this contaminated lot! Clearly, something they are doing allowed this to happen, and there is no reason to expect that they have addressed the problems that lead to this contamination. Every single item they have produced up to the present day needs to be recalled. It is extremely counterproductive to the public health and safety to not publicly and LOUDLY exclaim who the guilty parties are!

I got a bag of packaged chopped kale from a Kroger (Fred Mayer) private label and wound up with food poisoning in June. Left me massively dehydrated and lost more than 10% of my bosy weight, still recovering but took a while. Did not see doctor - this incident was obviously food poisoning. So there you go, find out who does the private label pack for Kroger and you have the source!

Just another example of government agencies blurting out what they believe to be their version of the facts, then trying to hide behind regulations by not going all the way to identify the source to the public and stop the outbreak. Certainly, epidemiology is an inexact science, but if the FDA or CDC or Iowa Public Health officials have that information, it is their obligation to release it. If they are afraid of being wrong (which has happened on numerous occasions) and consequently being sued...well, maybe they're in the wrong business to being with.

J. — Also, it's assumed the company that processed/shipped the product has been notified. Are inspectors/auditors now working with the company to find the source? Has the grower been told?
