Courtesy Columbia Marketing International The Kanzi apple variety from Columbia Marketing International Corp., Wenatchee, Wash., will appear at retail starting in mid-February, the company announced.
Kanzi was first developed in the European market by Greenstar Kanzi Europe from gala and braeburn apple varieties.
Columbia Marketing, Columbia Fruit Packers and sub-licensee Applewood Orchards are exclusive growers for Kanzi in the U.S, according to a news release. Mike Wade is co-owner of CMI and owner of the other two operations.
Kanzi will be available for about a month, CMI vice president of marketing Bob Mast told The Packer in late 2011. It’s the second largest variety planted in Europe behind Pink Lady, according to Mast.
The company markets Kanzi under a sweet and tart flavor profile. Fruit is being packed now.
CMI ships apples with double-sided, 7-by-11-inch point of sale cards. Each card includes a quick-response code that takes shoppers to a video of growers discussing the fruit.
