“You can use it for raspberries, grapes, almonds — anything that can go into a clamshell,” said Daniel Cannistraci, president of Linden, Calif.-based LCE Systems. “We’ve been approached about using it with fresh diced pears and peaches. I’m talking with some people about using it in poultry. It’s pretty expandable.”
The company’s clamshell checkweigher is accurate up to 0.01 grams, depending on the application, Cannistraci said.
LCE already had a system for larger packages, In Motion Smart Weigh, which it developed in partnership with Rice Lake Weighing Systems, Rice Lake, Wis. Cherry packers were the initial market for that. The clamshell checkweigher works on other principles.
“It’s a different type of technology, a force restoration load cell,” Cannistraci said. “Basically that means it’s weighing electromagnetically and because of this the accuracy we are able to get out of it is truly amazing.”
Poultry doesn’t come in a clamshell, but according to the company the technology has applications in the meat industry.
“If you go to the grocery store and buy chicken breasts, they come in a tray with plastic wrap,” he said. “There’s a lot of interest in weighing those types of packages on this machine.”
Number of clamshells weighed per minute is around 200 but varies by size.
LCE Systems plans to exhibit its technology at booth 3717 of the World Ag Expo in Tulare, Calif., set for Feb. 11-13. Video appears on YouTube.
“We have a lot of soft commitments now but we expect to close quite a bit of sales on this new unit in the next couple months,” Cannistraci said.
The company’s other products include industrial scales; case coding and produce traceability technologies; grading equipment; and software, among others.
