UPDATED: L&M adds Idaho potato shipper

(UPDATED COVERAGE, 3:35 p.m., June 20) L&M Cos. Inc. will market potatoes grown by Idaho shipper High Country Potato.

Rexburg-based High Country ships about 1.5 million 50-pound sacks of russets annually, said Tracy Fowler, general manager of potatoes and onions for Raleigh, N.C.-based L&M.

Potandon Produce LLC, Idaho Falls, Idaho, was formerly High Country’s marketing agent.

Adding High Country completes L&M’s goal of becoming a year-round potato provider, Fowler said. L&M has been adding shippers to its potato program over the past several years.

“We’ve always prided ourselves on being a one-stop shop, with year-round coverage,” Fowler said. “This completes it.”

High Country potatoes will be packed in L&M’s Nature’s Delight and Family Farms labels and in High Country’s Oven King label, said Carrie Smith, L&M marketing manager.

L&M has sourced from Idaho for years, Fowler said, but High Country is a long-term commitment, with L&M acting as the shipper’s exclusive marketer.

High Country’s 1.5 million sacks should push L&M’s Idaho potato totals up to about 2 million sacks this season and about 3 million sacks in 2013, Fowler said.
