George W. Mills, a longtime salesman for Hugh H. Branch Inc., Pahokee, Fla., is being remembered as a hardworking individual who helped drive Branch’s success.
Mills, 75, died Aug. 23 in Aurora, Ill., near Sandwich, Ill., where he spent his summers.
Possessing more than 50 years of produce industry experience, Mills worked for 40 years for Branch, starting in the packinghouse where he advanced to packinghouse manager and later worked on the corn, green bean and lettuce shipper’s sales desk.
Brett Bergmann, Branch’s co-owner and general manager, said Mills was a key and integral part of Branch.
“He was a dedicated employee who worked hard for a long time,” Bergmann said. “He put in a lot of long hours and helped building the business. His hard work and dedication helped establish Branch as an industry leader in the sweet corn business.”
Though he officially retired from Branch in the early 2000s, Bergmann said Mills worked the spring corn deal for Branch another two years.
In 1993, Mills won Glades Sales Associates’ “Produce Man of the Year” award.
Born in Brantley, Ala., Mills leaves a wife, Silvia, nine children, 14 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Services were Sept. 10.
