Katie StaglianoStaglianoKatie Stagliano, the 15-year-old founder of Katie’s Krops, is featured in Money Magazine as one of its “50 heroes in 50 states.”

The article honors people making efforts to improve others’ personal finances. Stagliano represented South Carolina.

Katie’s Krops has raised nearly $200,000 in donations from individuals and corporations to enable youth ages nine to 16 to grow vegetable gardens. The fresh harvest is donated to the underserved in their communities.

The nonprofit has funded more than 75 youth-run gardens in 29 states. Its goal is to support 500 gardens in all 50 states by 2018, according to a news release.

The idea for the organization began when Stagliano was nine and brought home a seedling from her school’s third grade Bonnie Plants cabbage program. Her cabbage grew to 40 pounds, and she donated it to a local soup kitchen where it fed 275 people.

The experience inspired Katie to educate young growers about agriculture and the environment.
