Mariani Nut Co., Winters, Calif., received the British Retail Consortium (BRC) certificate through completion of a food safety audit.

The British Retail Consortium program is a significant step in food safety and technical protocol for food suppliers, according to a Mariani news release.

The company was comprehensively evaluated from receiving and processing to packaging in seven categories:

  • Senior management commitment and continual improvement
  • A food safety plan
  • Food safety and quality management
  • Site standards
  • Product control
  • Process control
  • Personnel

After completing the audit, the nut grower-shipper plans to maintain the annual certification.

“An important part of this food safety program is that company resources and personnel will work year-round to maintain these standards and renew this certification annually,” said director of operations, Gus Mariani, in a news release.
