Trying to find new ways to merchandise tomatoes, Market Fresh Produce LLC is expanding its packaged tomato line by introducing a clamshell tomato.

Mike Kemp, vice president of brand development, said Market Fresh responded to customer requests.

He said the tomatoes proved popular in trials.

“When people are handling tomatoes, this packaging is fairly inexpensive and there’s less shrink,” Kemp said. “If you can catch the market right, depending on if there’s a glut, and you have a lot of 5x5s, there are many times when there’s a lot of tomatoes around that you need to move. You can put them in that clamshell and go with it.”

Market Fresh introduced the clamshells in early June.

Market Fresh markets vine-ripe and hothouse tomatoes, sweet and storage onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes, avocados, bell pepper and kiwifruit from major growing regions.
