FirstFruits Marketing and retail partners donated more than 250,000 pounds of fresh apples through The Take a Bite Out of Hunger campaign.
FirstFruits created the campaign to help feed the underserved and address food insecurity.
In 2010, 15% of all U.S. households experienced food insecurity, and 33% of those affected were children, according to a news release from FirstFruits.
”We appreciate the support we get from our retail partners during this promotion,” Jeff Schroeder, marketing manager at FirstFruits, said in the release. “They help us raise awareness by distributing our bags and point-of-sale materials in their stores. This program is about more than just the donation, it is also about getting people engaged and educated about the issues surrounding hunger.”
This is the third year FirstFruits has sponsored this program. Retailers, including Ahold and A&P/Pathmark joined previous participants Dave’s Marketplace, Sweetbay Supermarket, United Supermarkets and J.H. Harveys, to cover the cost of freight.
