Citing a shrinking customer base and opportunities to take advantage of expiring leases, Indianapolis-based Marsh Supermarkets Inc. reportedly plans to close eight of its stores by the end of January.
The company operates 62 Marsh Supermarkets and 3 O’Malia’s Food Markets in Indiana and Ohio and manages 25 MainStreet Markets in Ohio.
Store closures are centered in Indianapolis, Franklin, Lebanon and Muncie, according to news reports.
In a statement, the company said it is “reacting to the realities of the markets and making difficult decisions to address the long-term health of the company. This action is the first of a three-year plan we are implementing this year to position Marsh Supermarkets for growth and profitability.”
The company said it plans to remodel, rebuild and re-banner its properties.
