Mascot race raises funds for Ag Against Hunger

Mike HornickArti the Artichoke from Ocean Mist Farms and Chiquita Banana from Chiquita Brands International chat before the produce mascot race July 22 at the California Rodeo Salinas. SALINAS, Calif. – For overgrown vegetables and fruit, the mascots of Salinas Valley grower-shippers can really turn on the jets in a 100-meter sprint.

In a friendly competition at the California Rodeo Salinas, Green Giant from Green Giant Fresh won a close race run at a much brisker pace than the Milwaukee Brewers sausage races that inspired the fundraiser.

It was Fight Hunger Night at the Salinas, Calif., rodeo July 22. The mascot race raised $11,450 for the nonprofit Ag Against Hunger.

Donated by the grower-shippers, the final amount proved higher than expected thanks to final-day entries by the Produce Giant from Taylor Farms and the Produce Protector from Smart Wash.

Ag Against Hunger board member Sue Storm accepted the donation.

Foxy Lettuce from The Nunes Co. took second, while Chiquita Banana from Chiquita Brands International finished third.

The mobile vegetables and fruit pounding the rodeo’s dirt track also included Arti the Artichoke from Ocean Mist Farms, perhaps the largest vegetable competing; Billy Broccoflower from Tanimura & Antle; Celery from Church Bros. LLC; and Buster Broccoli from Pacific International Marketing.

Dole Fresh Vegetables also contributed.

Ag Against Hunger provides fresh donated produce to food banks in Monterey, Santa Cruz and San Benito counties, and elsewhere in California and the West.
